Weekly time table (strategy) for CEED preparation

Hello all

Please note that there is no universal strategy applicable for everyone. Strategy and preparation level varies from person to person based on their existing abilities (proficiency in a field), how much time to spend everyday, their status (completely dedicated or partially preparing and also aiming for other exams), their ease of understanding/grasping topics, their ability skills and so on. So, it all depends on personal capabilities, but this timetable will be helping those who need guidance or a systematic approach of preparation.

Having a reference time table might give you some idea of what topics to be studied, how much time to be spent for the topics, how length they are, your status/level for that topic and most importantly it will help as a check list to ensure that you don't miss any topic being unprepared.

The first strategy/time-table is for those who are average or below average at sketching/ drawing etc

The second strategy is for those whom are above average or very good at sketching

Kind note:

  1. I've included numbered labels for the Design part of CEED (Part - B), so that I don't have to repeat them every time in the schedule. I've given two Strategies for relevant people related to Part B (design part), but GA time table will be common for both the strategies
  2. You might be the best judge to know your abilities, shortfalls and the need for topic improvements, so adjust the given time table accordingly and go on your phase, that best suits you. Below timetable might only act as a reference :)

The following topics and their respective Labeled numbers will be used in the schedule given below.

(Label - Topic)

0 - product Design/Industrial Design
1 - Visual Communication, Poster, Logo
2 - Animation, Story board making, comic strips/frames
3 - Story writing, Story write-up given some characters, picture composition - story writing by looking at a scene/image
4 - Creative use of items - waste/reusable
5 - Problem identification given a scenario, finding Factors, design idea proposal for the prob.
6 -  Sketching, Line drawing, Exploded view/shape, composition, part view
7 - Shading/rendering
8 - Human/animal sketching line/object sketching
9 -  Ideas of using products and applications (like use of invisible fluids etc)
10 - Fault finding in existing products/designs/sketches
11 - Visualization and Imagination ques.
12 - Draw things/products/designs/human/animal from imagination
13 - Draw by copying/ replicating/ seeing existing images/ products/ scenarios/ scenes/ designs etc
14 - Study on latest technology, products, design ideas etc
15 - Ideas from others in social/print media say in blogs, FB, Pinterest, behance etc
16 - Sketch practice
17 - Previous years part B practice; going through questions to understand the nature
18 - Geometric/solid manipulations, transformations, views
19 - Perspective/Vanishing point drawings/study

Important Note (for CEED Design; Part-B):

  1. Going through existing products/design/frame/others ideas is very important, likewise finding faults and coming up with your solutions is always a good designer practice (at least in my view)
  2. Carefully understand the requirement of the design questions - What they asked or looking for
  3. Mind the evaluation criteria before attempting/solving any design question
  4. You need to have a fair idea on existing products and their technology. So, I've included a topic/section with this heading in the timetable
  5. Sketching is imp. but design idea is the first important criteria to be considered, that's why I've given greater emphasis on how you can culminate the process of idea generation by way of various practices listed in the Labels/topics

GA Study Strategy (applicable for all)

GA study includes verbal and verbal topics.
Since most of you can have access to aptitude and reasoning books, cost of which is comparatively less than any NID/UCEED/CEED books, I, therefore, list out the topics from those books.  I will list out the topics with their ranking in brackets. A very high rank (high being 5) means you are advised to prepare to the full for that topics, and a very low rating (low being 1), means you are advised not to spend much time on that and any rating in between means you are advised to give importance accordingly (time).

Verbal Reasoning
  • Syllogism (2)
  • Logical Sequence of Words (2)
  • Blood Relation Test (1)
  • Series Completion (2)
  • Cause and Effect (2)
  • Dice, Venn Diagrams (3)

  • Analogy (4)
  • Classification (4)
  • Analytical Reasoning (5)
  • Mirror Images & Water Images (2)
  • Embedded Images (2)
  • Pattern Completion  (5)
  • Figure Matrix (3)
  • Paper Folding (5)
  • Paper Cutting (5)

Hope this comprehensive time-table helps you prepare well!

If you feel like some topics are uncovered in the above weekly plan, please do comment here so that others would also know.

All the best for your start :)

  1. hello sir , i am prepairing for ceed 2017 , how i can prepare for gat . please mention some topics

  2. Which books are recommended for CEED preparation apart from the study material provided here?

    1. I haven't come across any specific book relevant to CEED. May be Arihant book for NATA will help for Geometry image based questions (top/side/all views).

  3. helo sir i'm preparing for NID 2017 for bdes will the timetable provided here for sketching works will help me in subjective portion or its for Mdes only?

    1. I fear it will not - might not be to the full extent. I haven't considered the complete NID design part here but only looked into CEED syllabus, while i'm planning to give NID time table in the first week of October, once the notifications are out. I just want to ensure the pattern that's why waiting !

  4. hi... i am a structural engineer and would like to know whether this ceed exam can help me to do interior designing for modern houses !! actually i havent come across about this in your blog “which stream is to be chosen by me?”

    1. As far as I know, interior design is not covered in mdes thru ceed. However, there's one course in NID for furniture and interior design. But again, I doubt whether that interests u or not. As a structural engineer and being a core interior design aspirant, it's better to look for other interior design courses (like certified or so) rather than CEED or NID. Just my view. Decision is urs!

  5. Thankyou so much for ur reply...
Can you briefly tell me about the certified courses and the institutes which offer them??
or suggest me some forums regarding this?

    1. A simple Google search should give u d details. I'm sure u wil find in d search.

  6. hello sir I face problem in visualizing product in space and perspective how to improve that

    1. Visualizing can be improved if you're are some what good at geometry views, I mean the concept of front, top n side views. If you can draw them with ur imagination, then u r good enough to visualize any solid r products. For geo. help ucan check below post.

I've included online links n ytd videos in the ceed/uceed resource pg. U can chk that. You can also go thru the books in the resource pg for perspective study.

chk the end of this page for videos - http://stuffyoulook.blogspot.in/2013/10/guide-for-Part-A-resources-GK.html

  7. hello sir,
now its last week of oct, so can you suggest me how shall i start your time table?
just from the beginning or shall i start with the mentioned topic that you have provided for every year?

    1. You can re-adjust the topics and schedule accordingly. Actually topics selection depends on your level and grip in subjects. So, you can reduce the time spent for that topics and adjust for other topics that u need to develop.

    2. While going through the previous year papers, I found that since year 2012 question papers are having PART A and PART B. And before that there was only one part.

Shall i practice older (2011 and earlier) papers too?

    3. of course u hve to,
doesn't matter how old they are, they still carry the required syllabus for CEED and it's not that easy to get creative questions like the one that appear in CEED anywhere else. So, practice all papers.

  8. Hi Sir,

Does the question paper vary for different departments in case of NID-DAT (M.Des) ?
Also have you come out with the time-table for NID (M.Des) preparation?
If yes, kindly forward the link :)

    1. according to the sample test paper that they released, i suppose that the ques paper for test 1 (DAT-1) must be a common paper. Only for the studio test and/or DAT-II, there will stream specific questions. I haven't come up wit time table for NID yet, have been working on resource collection, and some more topics list to be analyzed. I will do that after this work.

    2. Hi,
Can you share the link to the sample paper, please.

    3. NID-DAT Sample test paper (official)
Usually sample test papers or mock test of any exam are available in their official website. Like you can check the above pdf file in nid website download section. FYI.

  9. Hello Sir,

I am an engineer and have 3 years of work experience at Visteon electronics. Is it a good time to start for CEED prepartaion or should i try next year?

    1. u can try this yr itself, exam is on Jan, so u have almost 45+ days, whic his quite sufficient. Plan your weekends (or weekdays) properly and give a try this time. At least you will get an exp on how to face n manage the exam.

  11. hello sir,
I have completed 3 years of my engineering course and i want to pursue designing now. I am good at sketching and drawing.Which is the field that requires a great amount of sketching, preferably pen paper based,so that i can make use of my sketching skills to the fullest?

    1. You may consider for Arts course too, I would suggest you to look for NID exam rather than CEED if u r very much concerned about using ur sketch skills. I think Animation, fashion, graphic, accessory design etc are some fields that must be requiring more drawing.

  12. hello sir, I am last year engineering student and right now this is month of june. I will be preparing for next ceed. can you tell me how much preparation time is required?

    1. It depends on your sketch and design capability. But, usually, since this is still June, you got plenty of time and so save on an average 3-4 hours preparation for the first couple of months should be useful to you. You can either use your weekends to try preparing or set like daily 30 mins (or more) if you can. Thing is, since this is initial stage, you have only two concerns
      1. design idea
      2. sketch practice
Both should be done in balanced done, neither of them being extreme, like most students do the mistake of doing only sketching to the extreme with less concern on design practice, which most of the times turned out to be unfeasible.

  13. hi sir, I'm preparing for CEED'18 . I'm confused on managing my study plan as there are lot of resources you have shared. I'm average in sketching and improved my product and figure drawing from past few weeks. Now Im reading about History and general awareness 'cause Im bad in memory related stuff . Could you please guide me on how to proceed , I'm working presently but for past few months Im free , so I just want to finish all difficult topics so that later when i have office work I need not spend much time .Can you please jot down the important and priority wise topics

    1. I've already mentioned this several times - it's safe to spend time for GA during the last part of preparation but in the earlier months, it's good to focus on developing design problem solving, sketching as well as design and math aptitude. So, as far as possibke, try to cover up the elements of sketching, design thinking and problem solving along with image aptitude including ability type questions. Then as your exam is like in months, then you may start studying on GA, since if say u started now, then also u will be forced to revise them again (since they r memory based) and so it's like double work! Instead keep them at the last so that u will be able to remember till some days. I hop u got the point. Check the below two links for neat explanations

  14. Hello sir....
I m preparing for ceed2018...previous year i appeared for ceed2017 and scored above as the mentioned for my category(obc) in part A....but the problem is with Part-B, In answer sheet it mentioned 'NOT ATTEMPTED' , But i drew all the drawings
,I think i commit some mistakes while submitting part-B drawing booklet...we already discuessed it,please help me with this coz i need to be aware this time

This will also helpful for others this year

Also, is there anyone who experienced the same thing like me in previous exam...pls let me know.

  15. Hello Sulaiman,

In CEED exam and before you submit the answer booklet for part B, you need to write in the first page on which questions you've attempted. Because correction of the ques will go to diff. people and will not be done by one person. So, if they see some ques being marked as 'ATTEMPTED' the nonly it will be sent to that person for correction and for giving marks, else i think they won't send that to them - I think so. This will help save so much of time. I feel that's y the system has been introduced. So, next time when u give exam, don't forget to mark the ques no. as attempted in the first page of the booklet. Many had experienced this btw.

  16. SIR,
I'm pursuing my BTech and currently in 3rd year. When should I start preparing for the exam and also write the exam. Can I get any books outside to purchase. Please suggest me some material to study.

    1. U can do one thing, since CEED doesn't have minitation on no. of times you appear to exam, you can try giving this time, I mean in Jan'18, even without preparation. This is just to help you understood the exam process, the timing, the pattern and he way to answer. You can use this years experience to give next year with attention. For the next year exam - Jan-2019, you may start ur prep from Aug'18 to cover up ur final year exams too, as well as to deal with ur final yr project and also on placements. So you can maintain a balance. But, regardless, start practicing on sketching as well as design idea whenever u find free time like once in two weeks or so, so that u will keep in phase with the sketching and design solving habit, that will help u a lot in ur coming years.
For CEED, I haven;t found suitable book as of now, if ur friends or someone suggest, just give it a try. Materials for study r available in this blog itself - CEED resources and free materials

  17. Sir,
i will be appearing for ceed 2018.But i havent prepared anything yet.So is it possible to clear ceed with good rank if i start preparing now and what way should i follow...

    1. this is the right time to start, just go ahead rather than thinking!
      chk this pg - http://stuffyoulook.blogspot.com/2014/05/how-to-start-and-what-to-practice-for-CEED-exam.html
